World Environment Day 2025 @ GHS, Melakata, Davangere

The World Environment Day Program was conducted on June 5th 2025 at Government High School, Mellakatte in the district of Davangere at 11:00 a.m. under the initiative of the ECO Project, supervised by the BREADS & DBCLM. The theme for the World Environment Day was “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The event was organized in collaboration with the headmasters of two schools, Miss Shobha (Govt. High school) and Mr. Hanumanthappa (Govt. Primary school) who played an important role in planning and executing the day’s events. The purpose of the program was to raise awareness on plastic pollution threat to the environment and to actively engage school children in protecting their local environment.

The program began with an energetic environmental awareness rally. Over 205 boys and girls from both schools participated, marching through the main streets of Mellakatte village and raising slogans related to environmental protection. The rally was followed by a tree plantation where students and teachers together planted around 50 saplings within the school premises. This hands-on activity gave students a real sense of ownership and responsibility toward nurturing nature.

A forum session was then conducted with the participation of students, teachers and the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC). The program was presided over by Mr. Ravikumar, the SDMC President. Resource persons from Don Bosco, Mr. Manjappa B. and Mr. Sunil H. addressed the gathering. Mr. Manjappa delivered a detailed talk on the importance of World Environment Day, the causes of environmental degradation and the need for youth involvement in ecological protection. He encouraged the students to take active roles through their Eco Clubs and local campaigns.

Mr. Sunil then led the children and teachers in an environmental pledge, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability. The session continued with a speech by Mr. Sureshnaik, HM of Government High School, who explained the goals behind celebrating World Environment Day. He emphasized that the day is not just symbolic but a reminder for everyone to take action toward a greener future.

Mr. Honnappa, Eco Project Coordinator, also addressed the gathering and announced that 450 saplings would be distributed across 20 schools through their Eco Clubs, encouraging students to plant and nurture at least one tree at their homes.

The program ended on a high note with positive responses from all participants. Students expressed their happiness in participating in a program that allowed them to take part in real-life environmental protection. They stated that the day gave them new knowledge about environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation and climate change, and taught them methods of conservation such as planting trees, reducing plastic use, and community participation.

Teachers also felt that the program had a strong impact. Mr. Basavanagowda, a teacher commented that the initiative was not only informative but also inspirational. He suggested that similar community awareness programs be organized in the future to reach more people in the village. Many students said they now understand their role in environmental protection better and are motivated to continue these efforts beyond the classroom.

In conclusion, the World Environment Day celebration was a meaningful and educational experience for all involved. It combined learning with action, theory with practice, and individual awareness with community responsibility leaving a lasting impression on the young minds and empowering them to be future caretakers of the planet.
