ECO Clubs in Davangere


After the successful completion of the project CREAM (Child Rights Education and Action and Movement) aiming at promoting child rights and equipping children to demand their rights, DBCLM is venturing into a new project called ECO (Educate to Cultivate Organic). Thanks to BREADS Bangalore for this innovative idea and for the guidance and support in executing it in Davangere. The project aims at forming ECO clubs in schools that will motivate the students to engage in organic farming and will sow the seeds of environmental conservation.

Each ECO club is designed to have 50 members and after the school hours they will spend some time in agricultural activities especially in bringing up a vegetable garden that can provide for the midday meals. This will also work as a model for the villagers to imitate and implement in their own field for organic farming.

An initial survey was done by Mr Heerianaik BS, the coordinator of the project, for finding out the schools where the clubs could be started. After this survey and the verification of the spot Government Higher Primary School, Hosakadlebalu, Government Middle Primary School, Kenchanahalli, Government Middle Higher Primary School, Kondajji, Government Upgraded Higher Primary School, Anagodu, and Government Higher Primary School, Kadajji were selected for the implementation of the project.

The first club was formed and inaugurated at GHPS Hosakadlebalu, in Davanagere district on January 24, 2020 after an orientation and training on the objectives of the project. PDO, SDMC president and members, school teachers, parents and 120 students were present for the programme. In the keynote address Mr Manjappa B, Coordinator of CREAM, briefed the audience on the concept of ECO project, importance of organic cultivation, preservation of environment, organic manuring, advantage of having a good kitchen garden, etc.

The club in GMHPS, Kenchanahalli in Harihara taluk, of Davanagere was inaugurated on January 27, 2020 after the initial briefing and preparation of the members and place. SDMC president, Cluster Resource Person, Head Master, teachers, other officials and 45 students were present during the occasion. Mr Manjappa B, explained the project concept, need of environment education and the importance organic cultivation.

The third club was formed in GMHPS, Kondajji in Harihara taluk of Davanagere on January 28, 2020. It was inaugurated by Mr. Kulakarni (CRP) by lighting a lamp in the

presence of president, vice president and members of SDMC, Head Master, teachers and 80 students. Mr. Manjappa B narrated to the gathering the concept of ECO clubs, protection of Environment and healthy food.

Preliminary works of training and forming the members are completed in GUHPS Anagodu, GHPS Kadajji and GHPS Mellakatte in Davangere taluk. Once a convenient day is arrived at with the school officials and concerned people, one club each will be inaugurated in these schools in the beginning of Februar
